What is the BMI Calculator - Check Your Body Mass Index Online?
The BMI (Body Mass Index) Calculator is a health screening tool. It uses a mathematical formula based on your height and weight to estimate your total body fat and categorize your health risk.
How to use the BMI Calculator - Check Your Body Mass Index Online
- Select your preferred measurement system (Metric or Imperial).
- Enter your height (in cm or feet/inches).
- Enter your weight (in kg or pounds).
- The tool calculates your exact BMI and displays your health category.
Example
A person who is 1.75 meters tall and weighs 70 kilograms: 70 / (1.75 × 1.75) = 70 / 3.0625 = 22.86. A BMI of 22.86 falls into the 'Normal/Healthy Weight' category.
Understanding Your Results
The number provides a general indicator of health. Below 18.5 is Underweight; 18.5 to 24.9 is Normal; 25.0 to 29.9 is Overweight; 30.0 and above is Obese.
Common Use Cases
- Personal Health: Tracking your BMI over time as you begin a new diet or exercise regimen.
- Medical Screenings: Doctors using BMI as a fast initial screening tool to identify potential weight-related health risks.
- Fitness Planning: Setting a realistic target weight based on the 'Normal' BMI range for your height.
How it Works
The tool uses the standard formula: weight in kilograms divided by height in meters squared (kg/m²). For imperial inputs, it calculates (pounds / inches²) × 703 before categorizing the result.
Tips & Accuracy Notes
- •BMI does not directly measure body fat percentage. It cannot distinguish between fat and muscle.
- •Highly muscular athletes may score as 'Obese' on a BMI scale despite having very low body fat, because muscle is denser than fat.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is BMI accurate for everyone?
No. While it is a good general guide for the average population, it is inaccurate for pregnant women, heavily muscled athletes, and the elderly.
Does gender affect BMI?
The standard adult BMI formula does not factor in gender. However, women naturally carry a slightly higher body fat percentage than men at the same BMI.
